TE RANGATAHI PARAHUARAHI - HE REO ORA

Te Rangatahi Parahuarahi Webinar Series – He Reo Ora

Next Monday 24th March at 6pm, join Tayla Faddy (Ngāti Whātua, Te Rarawa), Naianga Tapiata (Te Arawa, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Awa, Waikato) and Shakayla Andrews (Kāi Tahu, Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Paoa, Niue) as they share how te reo Māori is an important part of their everyday lives and the responsibilities that come with being proficient speakers of te reo.

Tayla Faddy: Tayla is very passionate about te reo, and was lucky to grow up with the language. She currently wears many pōtae including being a kaiako at a kura kaupapa in her hometown, Ōruawharo, working as a university research assistant and digitising manuscripts from her iwi, Ngāti Whātua.

She feels fortunate to have te reo Māori in her life and that it is never far away from her.

Naianga Tapiata: Naianga was raised in te ao Māori, guided by Te Aho Matua and deeply immersed in te reo Māori. At 11 years old, he moved to Kuwait, where the absence of his language caused it to fade, returning home to Rotorua reignited his passion for te reo. His dedication saw him win the Pei Te Hurinui Jones section of the Te Arawa Manu Kōrero regionals in 2021 and receive a prestigious Te Reo Rangatira scholarship, presented at Parliament the following year. An orator for Waikato University, he was also named Dux of Te Pua Wānanga Ki Te Ao in 2024 and received an award for being the top student in his Pacific and Indigenous studies degree. Grateful for the guidance of his kaumātua, friends, whānau and kura, Naianga continues to carry the legacy of his ancestors through te reo Māori.
