The Pou Akoranga as head of te Kāhui Akoranga has a pivotal role in leading a stimulating, collegial academic environment at Te Wānanga o Raukawa giving expression to our guiding kaupapa. 


Your previous experience and leadership in Māori education will allow you to give effect to rangatiratanga as you provide strategic direction and academic leadership to academic whare ensuring the rangatiratanga of Te Wānanga o Raukawa is upheld and advanced. This is a key position with ultimate responsibility of ensuring all academic operational goals are achieved while working closely with the Tumuaki, Pou Whakahaere, Pou Whakatupu Mātauranga, academic and service areas to provide the ultimate learning experience for our people.


Your commitment to the expansion of the mātauranga continuum should be evident, alongside being an active contributor to hapū and iwi development. If you have excellent communication skills in both oral and written Te Reo Māori and have the relevant work-related experience, nau mai ki tō tātou nei Wānanga!

    • Inspiring and driving people to constantly improve academic services of Te Wānanga o Raukawa in an innovative manner to ensure its contribution to the survival of Māori as a people is maximized.
    • Demonstrating intellectual and professional leadership locally, nationally, and internationally, where required.
    • Managing competing organizational, professional, cultural, and personal demands.
    • Ensuring relevant structures are in place to support academic staff to ensure they are research-active and deliver quality teaching. demonstrating outstanding leadership skills and the ability to delegate, coach, consult, give advice, and make appropriate decisions.
    • Managing Kāhui Akoranga resources responsibly and making sound decisions that align with our kaupapa and Hei Whakamaunga Atu.

    Kotahitanga

    • Displaying behaviour consistent with giving expression to our Kaupapa at all times.
    • Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with all staff, students, and stakeholders.
    • From time to time, as requested, leading Ngā Kaihautū, Academic Board and other hui as appropriate in the absence of the Tumuaki.
    • Acting in a way that promotes unity within the organisation.
    • Meeting regularly with Ngā Kaihautū o Te Kāhui Akoranga to ensure they are leading their areas responsibly and addressing issues appropriately and within a timely matter.

    Pukengatanga

    • Ensuring high academic performance of Te Wānanga o Raukawa and that high quality undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes are provided and that Te Wānanga o Raukawa undertakes research that contributes to the survival of Māori as a people.
    • Stay current with any developments that progress understanding of kaupapa.
    • Pursue creative activity that extends the mātauranga continuum
    • Show commitment to growth, development and innovation within your role and encourage others to follow your lead.
    • Ensure that professional development is on-going and relevant to the entirety and breadth of the role.

    Ūkaipōtanga

    • Work with Kāhui Akoranga to prepare their contributions for the annual report.
    • Lead and promote a healthy, fair, and inclusive culture.
    • Uphold and promote equity outcomes and provide clear leadership focused on the goals of Hei Whakamaunga Atu.
    • Maintain a strong presence on campus, kanohi kitea.

    Wairuatanga

    • Provide direction that creates a balanced work environment and assists the organisation to operate efficiently.
    • Provide effective leadership that inspires staff and students with a shared sense of purpose and accountability. 

    Kaitiakitanga

    • Appreciate and fulfil the extensive diversity of the Pou Akoranga role within the context of Te Wānanga o Raukawa
    • Effectively identify, assess, and manage all risks that could affect the capacity of Te Wānanga o Raukawa to meet its objectives.
    • Be a Kaitiaki of the Wānanga and its Kaupapa
    • Maintain timely and accurate reporting to the Tumuaki and Boards of Te Wānanga o Raukawa, as well as external agencies.

    Manaakitanga

    • Work with the Academic Board to ensure that sound academic processes are developed, and that programmes and qualifications are administered effectively.
    • Share time and knowledge with others.
    • Be responsive to staff and students who require assistance, guidance, and time.
    • Negotiate across boundaries for resolution of problems.

    Whanaungatanga

    • Assist with all major Wānanga wide initiatives
    • Ensure a supportive climate is developed that contributes to the wellbeing, satisfaction and motivation of all staff and students.
    • Ensure equity is maintained and strengthened with respect to appointments, promotions, and workload.
    • Encourage and support the participation of our founding iwi in all relevant activities. 
    • Practise kanohi ki te kanohi where possible.

    Te Reo

    • Have excellent communication skills both orally and written in Te Reo Māori.
    • Encourage all staff, students and others with their studies and confidence in te reo.
    • Champion the use of te reo Māori locally, regionally, and nationally.

    Whakapapa

    • Commit to increased knowledge and understanding of whakapapa and its implications in decision making.
    • Be a significant contributor to Hapū and Iwi development.
    • Ensure high-calibre staff are attracted, developed, and retained.
