  • Te Matoe o te Reo

    Te Mātoe o te Reo symposium is about language revitalisation in Te Tai Hau-ā-uru.


    This year’s event will showcase the activities of exceptional reo champions across the region who contribute to the revitalisation of ‘te reo o ia rā’ (everyday language usage) in our homes and communities.  


    The symposium will feature Te Tai Hau-ā-uru language revitalisation exponents, champions, and rangatahi sharing their expertise, research, experiences, and strategies in restoring te reo as an organic and pervasive form of communication in our daily activities. 


    Education providers, wānanga, kura, kōhanga reo, publishers, teachers, businesses, booksellers and other contributors to the elevation, acquisition, and revitalisation of the reo will be invited to promote their reo offerings in the online environment. The target audience are Māori in the Tai Hauāuru region, language enthusiasts, rangatahi, whānau, hapū, iwi, kura, kōhanga, reo students and anyone interested in exploring whakarauora reo.  


    The event aims to inspire te reo Māori champions, teachers, advocates, and learners by sharing the successes, challenges, innovations, trials, and tribulations experienced by those working in language revitalisation, teaching, and learning.


    It will be simultaneously broadcast online. 


    The following broad kaupapa are potential topics for guest speakers and panels:

    • Strengthening the language of the home

    • The role of formal education

    • Language revitalisation, technology, and the internet

    • Engaging rangatahi in reo maintenance and development 

    • Ko te reo katakata o ia rā

    • Creating Māori language communities

    • Extending Māori language accessibilty 

    • Promoting Te Reo.
